Platech participates in the first “Biotech Meeting 2024” in Puerto Varas
At Platech, we are pleased to have participated in the “Biotech Meeting 2024” in Puerto Varas. This event brought together leading entrepreneurs, biotechnology founders, investors, and venture capital representatives to promote the Chilean biotechnology industry and lay the groundwork for a national association. Organized by Endeavor Chile and Kura Biotech, the event gathered around 90 participants and addressed key topics related to the needs and challenges of the Chilean biotechnology landscape, including access to capital, talent acquisition, knowledge development, and collaboration. Here are some reflections from our CEO, Patricio Ávila, following his participation in the event.
Could you tell us how this initiative began and who was behind its organization?
This meeting emerged from the initiative of a few key players in Chile’s biotechnology industry. Among them were companies such as NotCo and Botanical Solutions, which are doing outstanding work. In addition, organizations such as Endeavor, the main organizer, and Kura Biotech, together with several technology hubs, joined forces to bring together the most relevant players in Chile’s biotech sector.
What impact did this event have on the biotechnology community, and which areas of biotechnology were discussed?
The event was crucial for getting to know one another better and understanding the reality of Chile’s biotechnology industry. Several topics were discussed, including the main focus areas in agriculture, agroindustry, food, genetic improvement, and, to a lesser extent, the healthcare sector, with biomanufacturing being a cross-cutting theme across the different areas.
This initiative made it possible to build networks, understand the ecosystem, and seek answers to fundamental questions regarding the historical challenges and current needs of biotechnology companies.
What concrete outcomes came from the meeting, and how do you see the future of biotechnology in Chile after this event?
The main outcomes of the event included letters of intent for participation and contributions from more than 40 companies. A committee was formed to help lead this initiative. This new association could be successful due to the growth of the biotechnology industry in Chile.
You mentioned that there is strong willingness and initiative among the participants. How do you think this can influence the development of biotechnology in Chile?
Willingness and initiative are fundamental. There are many experienced people who are willing to contribute. By understanding how the ecosystem works and the reality of each company, we can go very far. The willingness of these people and their experience will be key to developing a robust and sustainable biotechnology industry in Chile.
Any final message for those interested in biotechnology in Chile?
Biotechnology in Chile has great potential. With the right support, collaboration, and willingness to innovate, we can significantly grow this industry.
